Located at the tip of a narrow barrier island off the coast of North Carolina, the small town of Atlantic Beach is almost completely surrounded by water. It’s separated from the mainland by Bogue Sound, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, and bordered on the south by the Atlantic Ocean. With miles of scenic shoreline, Atlantic Beach really is the ideal place for beachgoers, boaters, and water lovers of all walks of life. Some might even say it’s the perfect beach town!
Atlantic Beach: The Perfect Beach Town
Though it originally was formed as a luxury resort, Atlantic Beach is today a bustling community filled with opportunities for vacationers and full-time residents alike. Here’s why this quaint little seaside town just might also be the perfect beach town.
There are lots of public beaches
What makes a good beach town? A good beach, of course! And Atlantic Beach has that in spades; its miles of white-sand shoreline offer both private and public access to residents and visitors alike. Public access points around AB include Circle Regional Beach, Tom Doe Memorial Beach, The Les and Sally Moore Public Beach, and Fort Macon State Park.
There’s so much to do
Aside from the beach, Atlantic Beach actually offers quite a robust variety of activities—both on and off the water. On the Bogue Sound, boating, watersports, and paddling are favorite pastimes. On the beach side, both parasailing and scuba diving are lesser-known must-try activities. Both the beach and the Bogue offer ample opportunities for all types of angling.
For an on-land adventure, check out one of AB’s parks, like the historic Fort Macon State Park or Hoop Pole Creek Nature Trail (which also offers a kayak launch to the Kayak Paddle Trail). Finish off a full day with a bite at one of Atlantic Beach’s top-notch restaurants, like Amos Mosquito’s, the Island Grille, or Table 9.
There’s always something happening
Atlantic Beach might be a small town, but it’s filled with activity. There’s always something fun happening along its shores, whether it’s a music festival, a fishing tournament, or a seasonal celebration. Some of AB’s biggest events include the Atlantic Beach Music Festival, July 4th Fireworks on the Beach, Sounds Like Summer in the Park, Carolina Kite Fest, and more.
It’s surrounded by possibility
Atlantic Beach has plenty of its own attractions and activities to offer, but it’s also within a short drive of numerous other hotspots across the Crystal Coast. Hop on the causeway into Morehead City to explore a charming waterfront filled with restaurants and stores. Head over to historic Beaufort for even more quaint waterfront businesses. Take the ferry to Cape Lookout National Seashore and camp on the beach or watch wild horses.
There are lots of waterfront homes
If you’re looking for waterfront living, then Atlantic Beach definitely has a lot to offer. There are a number of oceanfront condos lined along the Atlantic, boasting beautiful views, private beachfront, and often a number of building amenities, too. There are also homes with deepwater canal access, as well as boating amenities like docks, lifts, or storage. And because the island is so narrow, many homes that aren’t directly located on the water still enjoy fantastic water views.
