The Big Rock – Impacting the Community

The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is one of the biggest events on the Crystal Coast, drawing thousands of visitors to Morehead City every June. And in addition to its more-than-impressive prize purse & week-long schedule of nonstop events, The Big Rock is a major source of charity fundraising. Here are just some of the Crystal Coast community organizations touched by The Big Rock:

Keli Wagner Big Rock Lady Angler Tournament

kwla donations and other big rock community impactSince its beginnings in 2005, the KWLA has donated over $300,000 to local cancer research and treatment. The tournament was named in honor of the late wife of Big Rock board member Casey Wagner, Keli Wagner, who lost her battle with cancer in 2008.

Additionally, sponsors, such as Linda Rike Real Estate, have allowed the tournament to donate more than $274,300 to women-specific charities since 1998.

Amped Up for You-tilities Event

This past fall, The Big Rock teamed up with the North Carolina Seafood Festival, which was cancelled after the devastation of Hurricane Florence, to create a new event to benefit the residents impacted. Thanks to the event, the two organizations were able to present a check of $50,000 to the local Salvation Army!

Carobell, Inc – Station Club Enterprise

Located in Morehead City, Station Club Enterprise is a community organization dedicated to helping adults with cognitive impairments and developmental disabilities. Together with The Big Rock, the organization has been able to provide new activities and resources for its members, including iPads, laptops, and other accessories.

2018 Notable Donations

Major donations over the last year were to the Morehead City Little League ($150,000 for improvements to Swinson Park), Beaufort Middle School ($22,700), Croatan High School ($20,000), and White Oak Elementary ($20,000).

New Salvation Army Facility

In 2017, The Big Rock gifted the local Salvation Army a donation of $262,500 to help with the construction of  a new facility, which includes a Family Store and service center. The Salvation Army helps residents throughout Carteret County by providing a social services office, a food pantry, a commercial kitchen for collaborative feeding programs, and various donations.
