The time has come to visit the sea shore and the Crystal Coast! There’s so much to do, see, and enjoy here, you’ll surely want to do it all. But unless you’re planning an extended stay, it’s not likely you’ll be able to do everything, so how do you make the most of your Crystal Coast vacation?
How to Maximize Your Crystal Coast Vacation
1. Plan Some Must-Do Activities
The Crystal Coast definitely has a few must-see attractions (aside from the beach) that you’ll want to incorporate into your stay. Don’t try and hit them all in one trip, as this will likely be stressful and leave little room for flexibility. Instead, pick one or two of your favorites to hit, and save the rest for the next visit. Some favorite local attractions of the Crystal Coast include the Morehead City Waterfront, Historic Downtown Beaufort, the North Carolina Maritime Museum, the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, and the Carteret Community Theatre.
2. But Don’t Forget to Go with the Flow
Not everything needs to be planned! Sometimes, you just want to roll out of bed and hit the beach, and that’s perfectly okay. Here in the Crystal Coast, the beach is never more than a few minutes away by bike, boat, or car. And if you’re looking for the most spectacular beaches in the area, you might consider the Shackleford Banks, the Rachel Carson Reserve, or even the Cape Lookout National Seashore—all of which are only accessible by boat or ferry, providing a quieter and more private trip to the ocean.
Even if you don’t necessarily need to be on the beach but definitely are up for some outdoor adventuring, there are plenty of options for that, too, like Fort Macon State Park or the Theodore Roosevelt National Area.
3. Get out on the Water
You don’t have to have your own boat to do some offshore exploring. There are plenty of boating tours and fishing charters available. Kayak and canoe rentals are also a-plenty, with guided tours and excursions also available. And there’s plenty to explore (whether you’re paddling or motoring)—rivers, marshes, creeks, rock jetties, the Bogue Sound and its many inlets, and of course, the open ocean.
And if you do own a boat, you’ll definitely want to consider a vacation home with easy water access, whether that’s a waterfront home with its own private dock, or a waterfront community with a pier or boat ramp.
4. Dine Fresh & Local
You’ll need to eat sometime… and of course, a trip to the shore isn’t complete without tasting the fresh local catches. Some top-rated local favorites you won’t want to miss? Amos Mosquito’s Swampside Cafe, Front Street Grill at Stillwater Cafe, Clawson’s 1905 Restaurant & Pub, Red Fish Grill, El’s Drive-In, Ruddy Duck Tavern, Island Grille, and Aqua Restaurant.
5. Participate in the Community
Truly get a feel for what it means to live in and experience the Crystal Coast by checking out a local event. They’re happening all the time, all year round, from concerts in the park to crowd-drawing festivals and tournaments. Some favorites to try (if you’re in the area at the time) include the week-long Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, the Carteret County Arts & Crafts Coalition Summer Show, the North Carolina Seafood Festival, Beaufort Wine & Food Weekend, or fireworks over the ocean on Independence Day.
6. Plan on coming back to do the rest
Even with a plan, you probably didn’t get to do it all. But that’s okay… there’s always next time! Take note of everything you didn’t get to do (or want to do again) and plan on making a return trip to complete your list.
Buying a vacation home makes return trips so much easier—no searching, comparing, booking, or even packing required! Just grab your wallet, your keys, and hit the road to your home-away-from-home!
