Whether you’re here for a short time or an extended stay, make sure you experience all the best of the Crystal Coast!
1. Visit the Cape Lookout National Seashore.
It’s only accessible by boat or ferry, so you won’t run into any crowds. And there’s plenty to do—fishing, strolling, shell-collecting, relaxing on the beach, climbing the lighthouse, camping, even admiring wild horses.
2. Paddle the Sound.
Bring or rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard and explore the placid waters and secluded inlets of the Bogue Sound. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can even head out to open waters.
3. Fish the Deep Sea Waters.
You don’t have to have your own boat, or any experience, to try your hand at fishing out on the Gulf Stream. There are plenty of charters and excursions that’ll guide you through the entire process.
4. Camp on a Beach.
Head to a remote beach with your tent and provisions and really sleep under the stars—and wake up early for some amazing sunrises! Cape Lookout, the Shackleford Banks, and Hammocks Beach all offer primitive camping.
5. Explore by Foot on a Hiking Trail.
Nope, the Crystal Coast isn’t just for watersports, fishing, and beaching. There are also plenty of beautiful hiking trails, such as Weetock Trail, an 11-miler that brings travelers through Native American settlement sites or the Neusiok Trail, a 22-miler that traverses beaches, forest, swamps, savannahs, and more.
6. Visit the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.
Spend the day touring the museum, or head outside to hike the Roosevelt and Hoffman Trails.
7. Discover Historic Downtown Beaufort.
Did you know Beaufort was actually named the #6 Best Beach Town in America? That’s right, so don’t miss out on a tour of the charming shops, delicious restaurants, and seaside beauty of its quaint-but-bustling downtown. And don’t forget to sample some of the fresh-caught local cuisine. Mmm.
8. Attend an Annual Event or Festival.
Besides all its outdoor exploratory opportunities, the Crystal Coast is also home to a wealth of events throughout the year, from weekly concerts to statewide festivals. Three you shouldn’t miss? The annual North Carolina Seafood Festival (October), the annual Craft Beer Festival (November), and the annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament (June).
